Have Salt In Yourselves

Matthew 5:13: Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.

Mark 9:50: Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith will ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace one with another.

Have salt in yourselves. Have the preserving, purifying principle always; the principles of denying yourselves of suppressing pride, ambition, contention, etc., and thus you will be an acceptable offering to God. Have peace. Avoid contention and quarrelling, struggling for places, honours, and office, and seek each other*s welfare, and religion will be honoured and preserved in the world.

British Family Bible:

Have salt in yourselves. That is, be examples of every virtue, particularly of humility and brotherly love, to those whom ye are to instruct and convert - *and have peace one with another.* He seems to refer to the dispute which the Apostles had, ver. 33, 34, respecting which of them should be the greatest. By salt is meant grace, spiritual wisdom, and virtue; and, if that do but rule and sway in our hearts, we shall then endeavour *to live peaceably with all men.* If we have salt in ourselves, that is, if we be wise, we shall then certainly *have peace one with another.*

Salt adds flavor, combats infections, and acts as a preservative. All of which is well and good—unless the salt has lost its saltiness, in which case it is no good at all. According to Dr. Luke, it cannot be used to fill, to build up topsoil, or even as fertilizer. It is just plain useless! Ye are the salt of the earth, our Lord said. Why did He choose this metaphor to describe the disciples* relationship to the world? Christians add flavor and spice to life. One believer can make a difference! Christians combat evil and act as godly preservative in society. By virtue of the fact that Christ indwells the believer through the Holy Spirit, the atmosphere of a Christian*s life and personality is bound to make a difference wherever he or she may go.

The secret of continued saltiness is to be found within one*s own heart. Jesus said, Have salt in yourselves (Mark 9:50). There is no substitute for daily contact with God through His Word and through prayer to maintain the salt content of your life! To neglect these resources is to lose your impact on a stale, polluted, and decaying world. Lot moved to Sodom, but lost his impact because, while there, Sodom got into him! When he went to warn his sons-in-law of impending judgment, they thought he was joking! Small thought here. Preserve, at all cost, your daily dynamic contact with your Lord! The alternative is probably the saddest phrase ever used to describe a believer: Good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men (Matt. 5:13). Paul disciplined himself, lest, he said, When I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway (1 Cor. 9:27).
